Is the Life Insurance Through Your Job Actually Enough?

Published May 13, 2026

"I have life insurance through work" is one of the most common — and most expensive — sentences in personal finance. Group coverage is a genuine benefit worth taking. It’s just rarely the coverage your family actually needs, for three reasons.

1. The Amount Is Usually Small

Typical employer coverage is one to two times salary. For a $60,000 earner, that’s $60,000–$120,000 — against a mortgage, years of lost income, and kids’ education, most families calculate a need of ten times salary or more. Group life is a good down payment on protection, not the whole plan.

2. It Disappears With the Job

Laid off, new opportunity, early retirement, illness that forces you out of work — the coverage usually ends when employment does, precisely when replacing it may be hardest. Conversion options exist but are typically expensive. Meanwhile, a personal term policy bought in your 30s stays priced on your 30s for its entire term, no matter where you work.

3. You Don’t Control It

Employers change carriers, trim benefits, and restructure plans. The policy your family is counting on can change without a single decision from you.

The Sensible Setup

  • Take every dollar of free group coverage. It’s part of your pay.
  • Buy your core protection personally. A 20–30 year term policy sized to your family’s real need, owned by you, priced while you’re young and healthy.
  • Be careful with supplemental group buy-ups. Payroll-deducted extra coverage is convenient, but for healthy people a personal term policy is often cheaper — and portable. Compare before you check the enrollment box.

The test is simple: if your family’s security depends on you never changing jobs, it isn’t really security.
